Would you hire you? Would you promote yourself? Here is a quick self-check of how well you are doing your job and whether you are ready for a promotion.
Take the best interview questions you have for selecting a manager and interview yourself. Be brutally honest, even take the time to write them out, no one else is going to hear or see your answers.
Here are some sample questions to get you started:
If I were to talk to the people who report to you now, how would they describe your management style? What about the people you report to and your peers?
If I were to interview the people who no longer work for you, the ones that have been promoted, left voluntarily or were terminated, how would they describe you as a manager and supervisor?
Give me an example of a time you had an under-performing employee reporting to you. How did you address the situation? Did the employee’s performance improve? If not, what did you do next?
My favorite:
Rate your management skills on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 representing excellent. Tell me specifically why you gave yourself that number and what would it take to get to the next number. Now tell me what you are doing to get yourself to that next level.
Describe the work environment or culture and the management style in which you have experienced the most success.
Tell me about a time when you had a employee who performed very well, exceeded goals, and sought more responsibility. Describe how you handled this situation day-to-day and over time.
What are you doing in the area of self-development?
What are you doing to develop your staff?
What is your philosophy of management that demonstrates what you value and add, as an individual, to an organization’s culture and work environment?
One of the jobs of a manager or supervisor is to manage performance and perform periodic performance reviews. Tell me how you have managed employee performance in the past. Describe the process you have used for performance feedback.
As a manager or supervisor, one of your jobs is to provide direction and leadership for a work unit. Describe how you do that.
Tell me about the worst part of your job and how you handle it?
